Hypermedia & Multimedia E96 exercises
No 1:
Grandfathers and fathers of hypermedia:
- Use WWW search engines (e.g. http://altavista.digital.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=aq&what=web
) to find information about Bush, Engelbart and Nelson on the Internet
- Use the search results to write a small portrait of the people and
their systems as they appear to the Web community today. Try to cover questions
like:
- How do they look like?
- How has Bush been honored?
- How do current researchers assess Bush's impact?
- What kind of business is Engelbart in today?
- What happened to NLS/Augment?
- What did Wired magazine write about Nelson?
- What is the status of Xanadu development?
- Write a WWW page with your answers and connect it to your hompage in
a visible place
- Write a few paragraphs about each person/system and include 5-10 central
links. It is OK to work in groups - just include all the authors on the
page
Deadline week 39.
No 2:
Assessing DEVISE Hypermedia:
- Install the Windows 95/NT version or start the Sun Solaris version
as described in the release notes. The Sun version
is currently integrated with Emacs and Design/CPN.
- Create a Hypertext/Hypermedia Database interlinking some documents
of your choice. Do at least the following:
- create a component of each type supported in the version you use
- create one link to/from each component type, including the composites
- create one multiheaded link.
- follow the links at least once
- create a dangling link and follow it
- generate an interchange file
- Then write a short Web "page" with your assessments and set
up a link from your homepage, similar to exercise no. 1. Discuss:
- to what degree does DEVISE Hypermedia fulfil Halasz' and Meyrowitz'
7+1 issues.
- differences compared to the Dexter model
- your general assessment, including the user interface and problems
encountered
- Finally take the interchange file generated from DHM insert

......

around the text, and create
a WWW link from the answer page to the modified interchange file you just
created. If the system unexpectedly creates some debug output, you may
link that into your answer, too. You should submit your answer via the
form, you find by clicking here.
You are allowed to answer the exercise in small groups, just include
author names. The deadline is the end of week 45.
